Waking up in the morning with a sudden jerk, “Did I miss the alarm?” Checking the phone twice or thrice to see and be sure of what time is it. And then you see a text message from your boss “meet me when you come in”. They are realise that they shouldn’t be thinking or reacting in that manner, but everything seems out of control to them. Their body and their thoughts. It is this feeling of not-being-in-control that makes them take measures such as avoiding certain triggering situations, places, object, checking again and again, etc.
Everyday life for an individual with anxiety disorder is survival; every choice seems like a life and death dilemma. With all the thoughts and bodily reactions the individual is exhausted by the end of the day, still their thoughts do not stop there. The loop of negative thoughts is never ending.
