Symptoms of SLD

Symptoms may include –

  • Difficulty in reading – inaccurate, slow, requiring more effort, or low comprehension,
  • Difficulty following or understanding instructions,
  • Difficulty with spelling, writing, or recall,
  • Difficulty or resistance to homework or activities related to reading, writing, and/or math,

Types of SLD

  • Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NLD/ NVLD) – difficulties in visual-motor skills, visual-spatial skills, and interpreting non-verbal cues.
  • Apraxia of Speech – difficulty with making the accurate movements required for speaking.

Causes for SLD

There are various potential causes such as –

  • Genetics. Having a family member with SLD increases the risk.
  • Psychological trauma. Childhood abuse or other trauma can negatively impact the brain’s development.
  • Prenatal and neonatal risks. Premature birth, exposure to substances, low birth weight, etc. can increase the risk.
  • Physical injury. This can include a sudden physical injury, such as by accident, violence, etc.
  • Toxic environment exposure. Toxins such as lead can increase the risk of SLD.
