Meet Our Team Of Autism Psychiatrists

Overview

Biofeedback is a safe treatment intervention for individuals with autism with minimal and temporary side effects such as muscle tension and mild headaches. Biofeedback has been shown to improve an autistic individual’s speech, make them less irritable, and increase their level of social interaction. It has also improved the symptoms of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which is co-morbid with autism for many children. There are various types of biofeedback training, of which EEG biofeedback, also known as neurotherapy, is one of them. Neurotherapy has been found effective in helping individuals with autism reduce anxiety, increase socialization, initiate touch and contact, tolerate changes better, less emotional outbursts, clearer speech partners, responding appropriately to the requests of teachers and parents, etc. Neurotherapy is a biofeedback type that measures brain waves. Other types of biofeedback measure different things such as breathing, heart rate, temperature, sweat gland activity, muscle contraction, etc.
