What Does Your Coffee Order Say About Your Personality? — Hindustan Times

Hindustan Times article on what your coffee order says about your personality, featuring Cadabam's Hospitals
Hindustan Times asked what your go-to coffee order says about you. Dr. Priya Raghavan, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist at Cadabam's Hospitals, explained that a coffee order is no personality test, but the rituals around it can reveal habits, comfort routines and how we cope with stress.

Strong black coffee, a comforting cappuccino or a sweet iced latte: does your go-to order say something about who you are? Hindustan Times explored the question on 17 October 2026 with expert input from Dr. Priya Raghavan, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist at Cadabam's Hospitals.

A coffee order is not a personality test

According to Dr. Raghavan, a coffee order cannot be used as a psychological test or as a reliable way of judging someone's personality. Our drink preferences can, however, reflect habits, routines, sensory preferences and the emotional associations we build around certain choices.

"Coffee is often tied to specific rituals, such as having the same drink before work, ordering a particular beverage when meeting friends, or choosing something comforting during a stressful day," she told the publication. In that sense, the order says more about a person's preferences and coping routines than about their underlying personality.

What your coffee habit can reveal

Someone who orders the same drink every time may simply find comfort in predictability, especially when the rest of the day feels demanding or uncertain. Someone who keeps trying new drinks may enjoy novelty and variety, but labelling them as inherently adventurous on that basis alone would be an overinterpretation.

In the same way, a strong black coffee doesn't mean a person is intense or highly driven, and a sweet, elaborate drink doesn't mean they are indulgent. "What is more psychologically interesting is the meaning a person attaches to the ritual," Dr. Raghavan said. For some people, coffee marks the switch into work mode. For others, it's a way to connect socially or a small reward during a hard day.

When the ritual becomes a crutch

If someone depends heavily on a particular coffee ritual to manage their mood, energy or ability to function, Dr. Raghavan noted, that pattern says more about their relationship with stress and self-regulation than the drink itself. Read more about mindfulness and stress management.
