Overview

In a biofeedback training session, electrical sensors are attached to the body parts of which physiological activities are to be measured. These sensors provide real-time feedback about the physiological states of the individual through a monitor via audio or visual cues. Based on the feedback, the individual learns to regulate their neurophysiological parameters in order to embody the desired state, which whenever the individual achieves, is rewarded by a positive reinforcement from the machine’s feedback. Thus, this becomes a positive loop between the individual’s successful self-regulation and the machine’s feedback which feed each other.
Biofeedback helps make the individual make the desirable changes in their physiological states. Thus in the session the individual might be taught to relax certain muscles, reduce feelings of pain, or slow their breathing rate. Some functions that the individual may be instructed to gain control over include – heart rate, blood pressure, blood flow, muscle tension, pain perception, etc.

What are the benefits of Biofeedback for Eating Disorder?

Biofeedback is a non-invasive technique that can reduce the need for medications in case of co-morbid conditions such as anxiety and depression along with an eating disorder. It helps individuals with eating disorders become better at emotional regulation skills, reduce their food cravings and rumination, and teaches them to relax when triggered by their unhealthy urges regarding food.

How many numbers of sessions are required?

The number of sessions required depends on the condition of the individual and their response to the biofeedback training sessions.
