A process in which small electric currents are transmitted through the brain to cause a brief seizure is known as electroconvulsive treatment (ECT). ECT appears to cause changes in brain chemistry that can quickly relieve the symptoms of some mental diseases, such as schizophrenia, while also addressing negative symptoms such as apathy, poor mood, and so on.
Although ECT is generally safe, some side effects are confusion for a brief time after the session especially for older adults, physical side effects may include headache, nausea, muscle ache and jaw pain.
